Vande Bharat Sleeper Class train, a landmark addition to the country’s rail network that promises to transform long-distance overnight travel. The train will operate between Howrah (Kolkata), West Bengal and Guwahati, Assam, marking a major expansion of the Vande Bharat fleet into longer routes featuring sleeper accommodation.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the development at a press briefing in New Delhi, confirming that the new service will be launched within the next 15–20 days, likely around mid-January 2026. The move follows the successful completion of trials, testing, and safety certification conducted by Indian Railways earlier this week.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train represents a significant upgrade in India’s rail travel offerings. Unlike earlier Vande Bharat services, which focused on daytime high-speed chair car journeys, this sleeper variant is fully air-conditioned and designed specifically for long-distance overnight travel. With modern amenities and enhanced comfort features, it aims to provide a compelling alternative to traditional express trains and even short-haul flights.
The inaugural service will cover a distance of nearly 1,000 kilometers, connecting the eastern metropolis of Kolkata with the northeast’s largest city, Guwahati. The route will include several scheduled halts at major junctions, improving connectivity for passengers along key districts in West Bengal and Assam.
The sleeper Vande Bharat is equipped with state-of-the-art coaches featuring comfortable berths, ergonomic interiors, automatic doors, and modern toilet facilities. During trials, the train reportedly achieved speeds of up to 180 km/h, showcasing its capability to reduce journey times compared with older overnight trains.
Safety enhancements have also been built into the design, including advanced suspension systems and comprehensive monitoring equipment to ensure passenger convenience and reliability during long journeys.
In keeping with Indian Railways’ focus on accessibility, the Vande Bharat Sleeper will offer tiered fare options across multiple classes. Preliminary fare information suggests a Third AC ticket could be priced at around ₹2,300, while Second AC may be roughly ₹3,000 and First AC approximately ₹3,600 for the full Kolkata–Guwahati route. Food charges are expected to be included in the fare structure, offering regional cuisine options to travelers.
These fare levels are substantially lower than typical airfares on the same route, which can range from ₹6,000 to ₹8,000 or even higher during peak periods. This cost advantage is seen as a key driver for passenger adoption, especially among middle-class and frequent travelers.
Transport analysts say the initiative reflects the government’s broader effort to modernize India’s railway infrastructure and enhance connectivity between major urban centers and regional hubs. By extending the successful Vande Bharat brand into sleeper services, Indian Railways aims to tap demand for comfortable, high-quality rail travel across longer distances.
Officials have also hinted that the Kolkata–Guwahati service could be the first of several sleeper Vande Bharat routes introduced in the coming months, with as many as 12 such trains expected to be operational by the end of 2026. This expansion could bring modern overnight travel options to regions beyond the northeast, benefiting communities and boosting regional mobility.
The timing of the launch, just ahead of assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam, adds a layer of political significance to the announcement. Improved rail services can be seen as an effort to demonstrate government investment in infrastructure and quality of life improvements across key states.
Railway stakeholders have welcomed the development, noting that the sleeper Vande Bharat train will not only enhance passenger comfort but also support tourism and business connections between eastern and northeastern India.
